The Grain Ship (1914) is a collection of short stories by Morgan Roberston. Published a year before the author’s death, The Grain Ship compiles works of short fiction originally published in Harper’s Monthly, New Story Magazine, and The Sunday Magazine. The ten stories of The Grain Ship showcase Robertson’s skill for yarn-spinning while benefitting from his experience as a merchant sailor. Dining alone at an upscale restaurant, an old sailor overhears an intriguing conversation at the next table over. He listens as a retired sea captain discusses the discovery off the coast of Spain of a merchant ship abandoned and overrun with rats. Intrigued at first, the sailor soon remembers an encounter nearly three decades old. While making his way across Arizona as a cattle driver, thinking of nothing more than returning to sea, he meets a stranger in distress with a faded anchor tattooed on his arm. Taking him to his shelter, he realizes the stranger has lost his memory, that he has no idea of who or where he is. When a rat runs across the floor of the shelter, he suddenly remembers his experience on a grain ship bound from San Francisco, a disastrous voyage on which the whole crewーsave for himselfーdisappeared. “The Grain Ship” is a tale of terror, illness, and doom on the high seas by an author whose experience as a sailor serves him well. Collected in this volume are nine more stories published during Morgan Robertson’s brief yet productive career as a professional writer, including “From the Darkness and the Depths,” “Noah’s Ark,” and “The Argonauts.” This edition of Morgan Robertson’s The Grain Ship is a classic work of American fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Phantom of the Opera (1910) is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. Originally serialized in Le Galois, the novel was inspired by legends revolving around the Paris Opera from the early nineteenth century. Originally a journalist, Leroux turned to fiction after reading the works of Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Despite its lack of success relative to Leroux’s other novels, The Phantom of the Opera has become legendary through several adaptations for film, theater, and television, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated 1886 Broadway musical of the same name.

In 1880s Paris, the legendary Palais Garnier Opera House is rumored to be haunted by a malignant entity. Known as the Phantom of the Opera, he has been linked to the hanging death of a stagehand in addition to several strange and mysterious occurrences. Just before a gala performance, a young Swedish soprano named Christine is called on to replace the opera’s lead, who is suffering from a last-minute illness. From the audience, the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny recognizes Christine, his childhood sweetheart, and goes backstage after the opera has ended to reintroduce himself. While waiting by her dressing room, he hears her talking to an unknown man, but upon entering finds himself alone with Christine. Pressing her for information, she reveals that she has been receiving lessons from a figure she calls the Angel of Music, prompting suspicion and terror in Raoul, who is familiar with the legend of the Phantom. As Raoul makes his feelings for Christine known, the Phantom professes his love for his prot?g?, and a battle for her affection ensues. Caught in this love triangle, threatened on all sides by jealousy and pursuit, Christine struggles to hold on as her star in the Paris Opera rises.

This edition of Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera is a classic of French literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. The seventeenth of twenty volumes of Zola’s monumental Les Rougon-Macquart series is an epic story of family, politics, class, and history that traces the disparate paths of several French citizens raised by the same mother.
Jimbo: A Fantasy (1909) is a novel by Algernon Blackwood. Having already established himself as a promising short story writer, Blackwood published his debut novel at the age of 40. A lifelong occultist, Blackwood was interested in the fine line between the human and spiritual realms, often incorporating supernatural elements into his work. Jimbo: A Fantasy is a story of a young boy’s out of body experience after sustaining a terrible injury, a narrative that explores the vibrant worlds we wake to in our dreams. “Jimbo had fallen on his head. Inside that head lay the mass of highly sensitive matter called the brain, on which were recorded, of course, the impressions of everything that had yet come to him in life. […] [H]e would have to wander, lost and lonely, through the comparative chaos of disproportioned visions, generally known as the region of delirium, until the doctor, assisted by mother nature, restored him once more to normal consciousness.” Unsupervised, Jimmy wanders into the fields near his home. Charged by an angry bull, he falls and strikes his head, losing consciousness for an indeterminate period of time. As his body struggles to stay alive, his mind creates a world of its own, a haunting realm of dreams both fantastic and somehow realer, more vibrant, then the world he seems to have lost. Jimbo: A Fantasy is a story for children and adults alike, a novel that poses timeless questions regarding the nature of our existence, both upon earth and beyond. This edition of Algernon Blackwood’s Jimbo: A Fantasy is a classic work of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Glimpses of Bengal: The Letters of Tagore (1917) is a selection of letters by Rabindranath Tagore. Published after Tagore received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, Glimpses of Bengal: The Letters of Tagore collects letters from 1885 to 1895, a period designated by the author as “the most productive period of [his] literary life.” Bridging the gap between fiction and nonfiction, these letters contain personal reflections on the political situation in India, mediations on nature and poetry, and stunning vignettes of life in the nineteenth century. “The unsheltered sea heaves and heaves and blanches into foam. It sets me thinking of some tied-up monster straining at its bonds, in front of whose gaping jaws we build our homes on the shore and watch it lashing its tail.” In this selection of letters, Tagore is at his philosophical, poetic best, reflecting earnestly and with ease on matters public and private. A young man, he writes with the clarity and wisdom of one who has lived many times over, granting readers a glimpse of the iconic figure he would become toward the end of his life and career. His portrait of Bengal is heartfelt and true, unadorned and yet possessing an almost mystical quality. Whether describing his travels upriver by boat or a dream journey through a Calcutta immersed in “a dense, dark mist,” Tagore never fails to intrigue, enrapture, and enlighten. This edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s Glimpses of Bengal: The Letters of Tagore is a classic of Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Fatal Revenge; Or, the Family of Montorio (1807) is a novel by Charles Maturin. Published under the psueudonym Dennis Jasper Murphy, Fatal Revenge; Or, the Family of Montorio was Maturin’s debut novel. Largely ignored by critics and readers, it managed to draw attention from Sir Walter Scott, who supported Maturin’s efforts and encouraged him to pursue a career as a writer. Despite its humble beginnings, Fatal Revenge; Or, the Family of Montorio is considered a masterpiece of Gothic romance. “Their palaces were haunted by groups of monks, and magicians, and alchymists, and astrologers; and amid the most superstitious state of the country of superstition, the House of Montorio was distinguished by weak and gloomy credulity.” At the siege of Barcelona in 1697, two brothers of mysterious origin fight bravely and gain the respect of their fellow officers. When the fighting has ceased, they are counted among the dead. Gathering his subordinates, their commandant, “acquainted with their name, and their country, and their misfortunes,” begins to tell the story of their cursed family. Fatal Revenge; Or, the Family of Montorio is a story of mystery and terror that engages with timeless themes of loyalty, fantasy, and fate.
Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People (1892) is a novel by Israel Zangwill. Raised in London by parents from Latvia and Poland, Zangwill understood the plight of the city’s Jewish community firsthand. Having risen through poverty to become an educator and author, he dedicated his career to the voiceless, the oppressed, and the needy, advocating for their rights and bearing witness to their suffering in some of the most powerful novels and stories of the Victorian era. “People who have been living in a Ghetto for a couple of centuries, are not able to step outside merely because the gates are thrown down, nor to efface the brands on their souls by putting off the yellow badges. The isolation imposed from without will have come to seem the law of their being.” As a Jewish immigrant who grew up in poverty in London, Israel Zangwill knows that the condition of life in the ghetto changes not just lives, but mentalities. Even if the Jews living in squalor on the East End of London were given the same rights as native Britons, they would still live with fear and doubt every day of their lives. In the first novel of his Ghetto series, Zangwill explores the day to day existence of these very people, illuminating their hopes and their dreams, illustrating their struggle to uphold traditions threatened by assimilation and the increasing secularism of modern life. The tales of Jewish life in Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People earned Zangwill comparisons to Dickens upon publication, and helped to establish him as an author with a gift for intensive character study and a passion for political themes.
Five Weeks in a Balloon is not only the first installment in Jules Verne’s celebrated Voyages Extraordinaires series, but also the first of Verne’s works to earn him widespread popularity as a writer of science fiction and adventure novels.

Following his invention of an ingenious new air balloon capable of long-distance flight, Dr. Samuel Fergusson embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with his trusted servant, Joe, and loyal friend, Dick Kennedy. As they make their way through air across the unexplored regions of Africa, they attempt to do what has never been done before: discover the source of the Nile. On the way, they must overcome extreme thirst, withstand assaults from hostile tribes, and stage a series of daring rescues and brilliant escapes. Jules Verne’s Five Weeks in a Balloon is a classic novel of hope and determination that asks today’s reader to take to the air, if only for a short time, in search of what must always defy belief.

Published in France in 1863, Five Weeks in a Balloon was translated for English-speaking audiences in 1869. This marked the beginning of an illustrious and lucrative career for Verne, whose works have inspired scientists, writers, and filmmakers for over a century. The novel is a curious mix of fantasy and reality, referencing the journeys of real-life adventurers while imagining an innovative and as-yet-unperfected form of exploration, the long-distance hot air balloon.
The Amorous Intrigues and Adventures of Aaron Burr (1861) is an erotic biography of Aaron Burr. Published anonymously decades after Burr’s death, the book incorporates some of the well-known facts and scandals of his political lifeーincluding his arrest for treason and murder of Alexander Hamiltonーwith lurid fantasies of his legendary encounters with women. Comparable, perhaps, to the modern phenomenon of fan fiction, The Amorous Intrigues and Adventures of Aaron Burr is a risqu? recreation of an infamous American’s romantic endeavors. “This talented, heroic, and energetic man was an adorer of the fair sex. From the age of puberty to the day of his death, (which occurred in his eightieth year,) Aaron Burr was keenly alive to the fascinations of the fairer portion of creation, and esteemed their smiles as sunny rays darted from heaven.” You might think you know everything there is to know about Aaron Burrーdisgraced several times over, banished from political life following his very public downfall, his story is a cautionary tale of excess and ambition played out on the nation’s biggest stage. For the anonymous author of The Amorous Intrigues and Adventures of Aaron Burr, the factsーboth historical and anecdotalーwere simply not enough. In this erotic examination of Burr’s legendary love life, we find another angle on a man who would be myth, a man shown here to be somehow less principled, and frequently less clothed, than the one we thought we knew. This edition of The Amorous Intrigues and Adventures of Aaron Burr is a classic of American erotic fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
A Child of Sorrow (1921) is a novel by Zoilo Galang. The novel, Galang’s debut, has been recognized as the first work of published Filipino fiction written in English. Modeled after popular nineteenth century romances written in Spanish and Tagalog, A Child of Sorrow is a classic coming of age tale engaged with themes of friendship, desire, and the loss of innocence. Simple and heartfelt, A Child of Sorrow remains a groundbreaking work of literature from an author who dedicated his career to education and the arts.

“In one of the rural and sequestered plains of Central Luzon, called the Fertile Valley, where the rice fields yielded the cup of joy to the industrious farmers, and where the harvest filled aplenty the barns of the poor, there lived simple, homely people, free from the rush and stir of city life.” In this idyllic setting, Lucio and Camilo discuss their plans for summer vacation. While Lucio, a dreamer “who painted brilliant lives on the nice canvas of memory,” wants to immerse himself in his collection of books, Camilo wants his friend to join him in the world beyond words. Together, they take a trip into town, hoping for adventure and camaraderieーand, if possible, to meet a young woman to fall in love with. Despite Camilo’s encouragement, however, Lucio longs to write poetry, to commune with the natural world with nothing but his own thoughts to keep him company. One bright morning, he runs into Rosa returning home with a pitcher of water. Before he can collect himself, Lucio confesses his undying love.

This edition of Zoilo Galang’s A Child of Sorrow is a classic work of Filipino literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Mr. Midshipman Easy (1836) is a novel by Frederick Marryat. Inspired by the author’s experience as a captain in the Royal Navy, Mr. Midshipman Easy is a tale of bravery, foolishness, and the manifold reasons for men to take to the high seas. Frequently funny, often profound, Marryat’s novel is an underappreciated classic of nineteenth century fiction that has been adapted twice for British cinema.

“‘Then, father, all I have to say is, that I swear by the rights of man I will not go back to school, and that I will go to sea. Who and what is to prevent me? Was not I born my own master?ーhas any one a right to dictate to me as if I were not his equal? Have I not as much right to my share of the sea as any other mortal? I stand upon perfect equality,’ continued Jack, stamping his right foot on the floor.” Fueled by his father’s philosophical ideas on liberty and equality, Jack Easy decides he will prove himself in a place where all men are equals. Despite his bravery, he soon finds that ideals will get one nowhere in the service of the Royal Navy. Working below deck with the African cook Mephistopheles Faust, Jack learns the secrets of the ship and encounters a lesson in discipline he will never forget. As he rises through the ranks and makes a name for himself during the fierce fighting of the Napoleonic Wars, Jack discovers new depths to his fortitude that would never have showed themselves had he stayed on land.

This edition of Frederick Marryat’s Mr. Midshipman Easy is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Ruth is a young orphaned girl who works in a sweatshop. Mrs. Mason, Ruth’s boss, runs the sweatshop in a respectable manner, earning a sterling reputation among her employees and society. However, the comfort and acclaim of Ruth’s job is threatened when she attends a ball to repair any dresses that get torn during dancing. There, she meets an aristocratic man named Henry Bellingham, who is infamous for his immoral treatment of women and frivolous spending. Ruth, however, is blinded by his charm, and after they have another chance encounter, befriends the man. When they are spotted together, Ruth’s reputation is at stake as rumors start to fly. Held to lower standards by society, Henry is slightly looked down on, but his wealth and gender protects him from actual consequence. Perhaps that is why he finds it so easy and acceptable to leave Ruth, stranding her in Wales with a small allowance and tarnished reputation. Hopeless and pregnant, Ruth slips into a deep despair.
Kari the Elephant (1922) is a children’s book by Dhan Gopal Mukerji. Published the year Mukerji moved from San Francisco to New York City, Kari the Elephant is the debut children’s book from the first Indian writer to gain a popular audience in the United States. Although less popular than his novel Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon (1927), which won the 1928 Newbery Medal, Kari the Elephant is a beautiful tale of kinship between the human and animal worlds set in the lush forests of the author’s native India. “Kari, the elephant, was five months old when he was given to me to take care of. I was nine years old and I could reach his back if I stood on tiptoe. He seemed to remain that high for nearly two years. Perhaps we grew together; that is probably why I never found out just how tall he was.” Raised side by side, Kari and his handler grow inseparable through their travels in the Indian countryside. As their adventures bring them to cities, jungles, and distant lands, boy and elephant overcome danger and learn the true meaning of friendship. Although he never returned to his native country, Mukerji left an inspiring legacy through his literary achievement and unwavering commitment to Indian independence. This edition of Dhan Gopal Mukerji’s Kari the Elephant is a classic of Indian American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Caleb Williams; Or, Things as They Are (1794) is a novel by English writer and political philosopher William Godwin. Published a year after the appearance of his Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793), Caleb Williams; Or, Things as They Are is a thriller and mystery based on the principles set forth in his popular work of anarchist political philosophy.

Caleb Williams, a self-educated orphan, gets a job at the estate of Ferdinando Falkland, a reclusive aristocrat. Curious as to his master’s temperamental nature, Williams asks the estate’s administrator to share any information he knows regarding Falkland’s past. Through Mr. Collins, Caleb learns of Falkland’s feud with Barnabas Tyrrel, his oppressive neighbor. Caleb is surprised to discover that Falkland was once regarded as a generous and gregarious gentleman who persevered in vain for the love of Tyrrel’s niece. Following Emily Melville’s untimely death and the unsolved murder of Barnabas Tyrrel, Falkland became an embittered man, prone to violent outbursts and averse to social interaction. Shocked by Mr. Collins’s account, Caleb begins to investigate Falkland’s behavior and soon grows to suspect his master of murder. When news of his suspicion reaches Falkland, he accuses Caleb of attempted theft, forcing the young man to flee under threat of imprisonment. A fugitive, Caleb resists the temptations of criminal life, but the pastーand Falklandーare never far behind him.

This edition of William Godwin’s Caleb Williams; Or, Things as They Are is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
In 1928, there were three lesbian novels published in England: Viriginia Woolf’s Orlando: A Biography, Compton Mackenzie’s Extraordinary Women, and Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness. Between them, each book offered then-revolutionary ideas about love, sexuality, and gender; but only one has been banned, welcomed praise, and garnered controversy for almost a century.

Stephen Gordon has always been different. Firstly, she was born a girl against her parent’s wishes. Secondly, she is raised to be boyishーthe son her father always wantedーmuch to her mother’s disdain. However, the most damning thing of all is Stephen’s love for other women, something society isn’t quite ready to accept. While Stephen lives a good lifeーthat is, having wealth and opportunity by virtue of being born into an upper-class aristocratic familyーit is far from an easy one. For Stephen, life is a frustrating existence where she does not know the meaning of herself or where she belongs in the world…that is until she meets Angela Crossby, and comes to know romantic love for the very first time.

Autobiographical in nature, Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness is an intensely emotional novel about what it means to be queer in the early twentieth century.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Taboo (1921) is a comic fantasy novel by James Branch Cabell. Set in a world where history and fantasy collide, where a lowly pawnbroker can encounter monsters, gods, and devils, Taboo is a follow up to Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice, which was the subject of an obscenity trial pursued by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. In 1923, after winning his case, Cabell made sure to immortalize the event with a revised edition featuring a “lost” chapter where Jurgen is persecuted for his writing by grotesque Philistines. In Taboo, one work in a series of novels, essays, and poems known as the Biography of the Life of Manuel, Cabell explores the cultural environment that led to his work’s persecution, inventing a whole world in which to air his grievances. “Since time's beginning, every age has had its literary taboos, selecting certain thingsーmore or less arbitrarily, but usually some natural functionーas the things which must not be written about. To violate any such taboo so long as it stays prevalent is to be ‘indecent’: and that seems absolutely all there is to say concerning this topic, apart from furnishing some impressive historical illustration...” While most authors in the midst of an obscenity trial would be content to let their lawyer do the talking, James Branch Cabell took the opportunity to reflect on the matter in the only way he knew how. In this work, written in the style of medieval history, Cabell tells the story of Philistia, a country dedicated to the persecution of all manner of ill-defined vice and taboo. Bold and satirical, this thinly veiled critique of his own, high-minded critics is essential to understanding Cabell’s vision of art. Cabell’s work has long been described as escapist, his novels and stories derided as fantastic and obsessive recreations of a world lost long ago. To read Taboo, however, is to understand that the issues thereinーthe struggle for power, the unspoken distance between men and womenーwere vastly important not only at the time of its publication, but in our own, divisive world. This edition of James Branch Cabell’s Taboo is a classic of fantasy and romance reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Ebb-Tide (1894) is a novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne. Published the year of Stevenson’s death from tuberculosis, the last of three collaborations between the legendary Scottish storyteller and his stepson is a story of adventure, friendship, and greed. Although less popular than other titles in Stevenson’s body of work, the novel has been recognized for its pointed critique of British and American imperialism in the South Pacific. Tossed by the waves of fate, three beggars frequent the ports of Tahiti in search of money and food for survival. When a merchant schooner devastated by smallpox docks at Papeete in need of new officers, the only men willing to take the job are Davis, Herrick, and Huish. A former sea captain, Davis takes charge of the vessel filled with crates of champagne, but soon the men find their cargo too tempting to leave untested. As the crew descends into drunkenness, Huishーthe only beggar born into poverty, the only one among them who understands the value of a jobーtakes control of the schooner. As they near their final destination, as the men begin to worry about the missing cargo and lack of food, a plot to overthrow the officers takes form.
Confessions (401) is the work of Saint Augustine, a Roman theologian and bishop responsible for some of the core doctrines of today’s Catholic church. His literary works, including The Confessions, The Enchiridion, and On Christian Doctrine, are commonly viewed as foundational works of Christian theology and Western philosophy. Bishop of Hippo Regiusーin modern day Algeriaーfrom 395 to his death in 430, Augustine helped to justify and consolidate the role of Christianity in the Roman Empire and was canonized as a saint for his efforts.

A young man does poorly in school, steals from his neighbor’s orchard, and has a son with a woman to whom he is not married. These are some of the core personal experiences detailed by Augustine in his autobiographical and theological work Confessions, in which he grows from a life of sin to accepting God and the Christian faith. Interspersed with stories of his life and conversion are descriptions and critiques of Neoplatonism, Manichaeism, and astrology, systems of belief and understanding which, for Augustine, fall short of the vision of humanity and salvation offered by Christianity. Throughout this text, Augustine encourages readersーespecially those who have led troubled livesーnot only to convert to Christianity, but to understand the inherent imperfection of all humanity and to envision the ultimately hopeful message of transformation and forgiveness offered by faith in God. Confessions is at heart a Christian text, but it is also essentially human. Augustine is remembered not just as a saint and Christian leader, but as a figure who precipitated the evolution of Western thought.

Augustine’s Confessions is a foundational work of autobiographical and philosophical writing, influencing such writers as Blaise Pascal, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Aquinas, Bertrand Russell, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Its personal nature and depth of honesty are considered formal innovations in autobiography and memoir writing, and its meditations on God and human nature have made it an essential text for philosophers and theologians for centuries.

This edition of Saint Augustine’s Confessions is a classic of autobiography and Christian theology reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
For the Pleasure of His Company: An Affair of the Misty City (1903) is a novel by Charles Warren Stoddard. Published toward the end of Stoddard’s career as a poet and travel writer whose friends included Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce, For the Pleasure of His Company: An Affair of the Misty City is a pioneering novel that explores the ambitions of a young artist while illuminating the struggles of gay men in a society that failed to accept them as equals.

At 25 years of age, Paul Clitheroe is “master of himself, but slave to fortune.” A struggling writer, he lives a life of ennui and excess, looking for love and success without being sure of the shape of either. In the Misty City, he has begun making a name for himself among local editors and readers, finally finding publication for his work. Despite this modest success, he remains unsatisfied, unsure of himself, and increasingly restless. Are his mixed feelings merely a symptom of his poetic outlook, or something else altogether? When the debonair Foxlair invites Paul to join him on a voyage to the South Seas, a land of promise where gay men can live without fear of reprisal, he wonders if there is a place for him after all.

This edition of Charles Warren Stoddard’s For the Pleasure of His Company: An Affair of the Misty City is a classic work of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. Written and rewritten over a number of years, An American Tragedy is a weighty epic with a cleareyed vision of the decay at the heart of industrialized society.
Flint and Feather (1913) is a collection of the complete poems of E. Pauline Johnson. Revered as one the foremost Canadian poets of her time, Johnson was a prolific writer whose works explored her Mohawk heritage while shedding light on the racism and persecution faced by indigenous peoples across North America.

“The lyrical verse herein is as a ‘Skyward floating feather, / Sailing on summer air.’ And yet that feather may be the eagle plume that crests the head of a warrior chief; so both flint and feather bear the hall-mark of my Mohawk blood.” So states Johnson in the foreword to her complete poems, Flint and Feather, a collection that captures not only her range as a poet in tune with the Romantic tradition, but her dualistic sense of identity as a woman of Mohawk and English heritage. Choosing to emphasize the former, Johnson, who also went by Tekahionwake, her great-grandfather’s name, adopts the persona of an Indian wife who, watching her love depart, wonders what he will “suffer from the white man’s hand.” In fear, in anger, in desperation, she proclaims “By right, by birth we Indians own these lands, / Though starved, crushed, plundered, lies our nation low…” In the face of defeat, she offers a poetry in tune with the “ghost upon the shore,” the voices one hears “when the Northern candles light the Northern sky.” Johnson’s voice is thus both one of resistance and mourning, her song one of a land of plains and rivers, of fields that await the harvest despite the “prying pilot crow” whose “thieving raids” descend “[a]t husking time.”

This edition of E.
"Will writers ever recover that peculiar blend of security and alertness which characterizes Mrs. Wharton and her tradition?” -- E. M. Forster

The Descent of Man and Other Stories offers the author’s well-known depictions of upper class life in New York, but also exhibits her remarkable talent in tales of humorous irony, history and the supernatural.

Originally published in 1904 The Descent of Man and Other Stories features the author’s nuanced prose and sharply observed characters in a chain of unforgettable tales. In several Wharton examines marriage, which was frequently arranged in her era. The author digs deep into her characters to find what can hold a marriage together or slowly pull it apart. The difficulty of establishing and maintaining honest relations in a highly stratified and proper society is a consistent challenge for her characters, especially in the title story in which a man of principle finds himself misunderstood and forced to potentially compromise his beliefs. Wharton also affords glimpses into the trials of being an author, drawing both drama and humor from the profession. There’s a chance to sample the author’s ghostly fiction, which has long been appreciated by aficionados of the macabre. This is a showcase for the author’s range of interests and for her remarkable ability to tell memorable stories that strike to the heart.

With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Descent of Man and Other Stories is both modern and readable.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Financier (1912) is a novel by Theodore Dreiser. The first installment of Dreiser’s Trilogy of Desire, The Financier has endured as a classic of naturalist fiction and remains a powerful example of social critique over a century after its publication. Followed by The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947), The Financier captures the greed at the heart of the Gilded Age, a time when tycoons rose with total impunity to take over swaths of American industry. Based on the life of Charles Yerkes, an influential businessman who funded the development of railway systems in Chicago and London, The Financier is a masterpiece of twentieth century American literature that continues to resonate today. Born the son of a banker, Frank Cowperhood comes of age in a rapidly changing Philadelphia.
Life Among the Paiutes (1883) is a book by Sarah Winnemucca. Written toward the end of a lifetime of advocacy on behalf of Native Americans, Life Among the Paiutes is a hybrid work of history and memoir by Sarah Winnemucca, who witnessed firsthand the dangers of unchecked occupation by US government and military forces. Intended as a rallying cry to white Americans, Life Among the Paiutes is considered the first autobiographical work written by a woman of Native American heritage. Oh my dear good Christian people, how long are you going to stand by and see us suffer at your hands?” First and foremost, Winnemucca’s groundbreaking text is intended for an Anglo-American audience, whose political status the author hopes to use as a means of bringing her message to the halls of Congress. In the memoir section, Winnemucca describes her upbringing among the Northern Paiute in Nevada, whose lives were irrevocably disrupted by incursions from white settlers and military raids. After the murder of her mother and several members of her family by the US Cavalry, Winnemucca dedicated herself to social work and activism, using her knowledge of the English language to reach a larger audience. Weaving her own story into the story of her people, Winnemucca makes a compelling case for the reparation of land and sovereignty to the Northern Paiutes, who had been devastated and dispersed for decades after making contact with American settlers. This edition of Sarah Winnemucca’s Life Among the Paiutes is a classic work of Native American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
